When I was invited to listen to Julian Kelly’s new album “Her,” I wasn’t sure what to expect. The reclusive songbird has released a deluge of albums as of late. That combined with swirling rumors that emerged in February of last year about her failing health would make any of her fans worry. Luckily though, Julian says that she’s fine now.

Selfishly I’d love to see Julian Kelly sell-out and become more of a mainstream artist so that she can skyrocket to platinum fame, as she certainly would, were she to join the ranks of her mainstream peers. ButI guess that one of the reasons we love her so much is precisely because Julian’s different.

Her style seems to change with the ease of the wind. Her albums take us through the entire emotional spectrum: we laugh, we cry, we feel horny; we fall in love with her all over again.

Julian’s new and fourth album, “Her” pulls from many styles, but for the first time, Julian’s voice blends cohesively with her genre.

“Her” isn’t just written for one person. There were obviously a collection of females being thanked (and at times admonished). This is an album about the many women who have shaped her, guided her, inspired her, and at times, broken her heart. This is an album by someone who so clearly knows how to love—but it is written for people willing to feel deeply. Some songs are sexy and flirtatious, while others are slow, reminiscent of love-making, or daydreaming. Surprisingly, there are also lots of songs you can dance to.

Overall, “Her” is a beautiful album. For me, it ranks right up there with Beyonce’s Lemonade and Mariah Carey’s Fantasy.

Julian Kelly’s new album “Her” is slated for release on 9/22/17 at all major music retailers worldwide.
