Meet the New York’s “Trumpet Lady” Syreeta Thompson

Syreeta Thompson, better known as “The Trumpet Lady”, she is a Stellar Award nominated performer… She has also skillfully written six curriculum for the East Orange School District and is a Master Music Educator with the New Jersey Education Association. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with her in an interview :


US Mag : Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your background, education etc. ??

Most people call me Syreeta Thompson “trumpetlady; I have B.A in Music from Rutgers University and Masters degree in Jazz composition/ Arranging and film scoring. I grew up in the city of Chicago participating in all of Chicago All city music programs.

US Mag : We been hearing a lot about you as “The Trumpet Lady”, so we notice your starting to gain a lot of attention how does it feel ?

lolol Actually, this sounds funny! I became aware of the attention when I was walking down the street and someone yelled “Syreeta” then “trumpetlady” that’s when I realized I was gaining some attention.
US Mag : At what point did you decided to become a trumpet player ?

Well I decided to become a trumpet player after my mom told me she was NOT going to keep purchasing instrument rentals from the school.
US Mag :  You recently released your second studio album entitled “Winner” can you please tell our readers more about it ?

Winner is a body of work the is comprised of singing, trumpet playing, grooves, lyrical speaking which encompasses arts education. I wanted to record a body of work to help inspire the next generation through music. My over all goals are to inspire the next generation and individuals to go after their dreams without hesitation. Also, believe in your dreams, don’t stop and don’t quit no matter what the obstacle.

US Mag : How do you feel when you are nominated for Awards ? And when you win an Award ?

Being nominated is a joy and honor however, it’s always a nail biter because your not aware if your going to win! Lol! I’ve learned to stay focus on the work and NOT the accalades.
US Mag :  Did you choose the music industry, as a career, or as a hobby ?

Music is my passion! The music industry came along with my passion which turned into a career.
US Mag :  If you could perform anywhere, in the world, where would it have to be ?

I would love to perform in Iceland and Sydney Austrialia.
US Mag : Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time ?

lolol! I actually enjoy going to hear and see the ballet and the orchestra.
