Meet the Author of The Choices We Make | Manuel Barbery

US Mag: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Background, education, writing passion…etc

I was born and raised in Flushing, in the New York Borough of Queens and now live a little further south, in the Jamaica area, with my wife and son.
Having attended Queens Community College, majoring in Computer Information Systems and minoring in Liberal Arts, I became a teacher’s aide and worked his way up to teacher’s assistant, working with mentally disabled children. I then left this line of work and am now employed full time in law enforcement.

Following the birth of my son who had to spend time in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), I decided to write about his experiences and help others who were going through the same difficulties. My book, The Choices We Make, details his fears at the time, along with his hope for the future of his son and he was assisted by many sources to bring it to a reality.

US Mag: Can you tell us a bit about your book, ‘ The Choices We Make ‘?

The book is about the greater masterpiece of what two people in love can bring into this world and a beautiful baby boy born early with several complications and medical events. For me as a parent I had no idea of the hardships and perilous endeavors I would face with my wife. It was one night that changed our lives forever. My son was born early at 23 weeks where it was at that point doctors had introduced me into a world that was unknown to my wife and I. The baby underwent extensive care and many traumatic events that would forever be engraved in our thoughts. This book will inspire you to have hope when all seems lost. My book is the story of the strength of my son, the faith we had for him, and the love that brought us all together.

US Mag: Nice, What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration came from my son where as he grows I take part in a milestone that in several points in my life I thought he would never meet. When he was discharged from the NICU he had machines hooked up to him, a pulse sock to measure heart rate and oxygen saturation levels and oxygen tank hooked up to a nasal cannula. These machines would sustain and monitor his vitals. He had 8 different medications that had to be administered daily where he also needed respiratory treatments twice a day. The older he got, although delayed he began to sit up, where next he crawled and it was within the last year did he finally walk. These beautiful moments despite the challenges he faced are what inspired me and I hope many others become inspired as well in times of struggle to keep pushing forward.

US Mag: What do you want readers to gain from reading your book?

I would want and hope that readers get an understanding of preemies and how tough they can be despite their appearance and medical condition. Those that are looking for that support and guidance can read my story and with my experience others can see that if you believe and fight your way through, anything is possible.

US Mag: Do you want to share anything about your promo Video?

My promo video is a reflection of my journey from walking through those hospital doors, talking to my son through the incubator and to holding his hand with the warmth of the sun on my face. To show that the love of my family brought us all together.

US Mag: Awesome, What motivates you to do your best as a Author?

What motivates me is my son and once again touching up what I said previously, its his milestones that he accomplished. Seeing him grow and develop is such a wonder of amazement for me considering how he first looked when he was born.

US Mag: At what stage did you decide to become an Writer?

I decided to be an Author once I realized the impact my story could have on others who were in need of guidance. I’m actually in the works of another book showing Life After The Nicu to show the continuing journey.

US Mag: How can a new writer get started? Any tips?

A new writer can start by talking about something they are passionate in. I often say that many of us are gifted with a talent. Sometimes it takes a trauma or just a leap of faith to realize your potential, so my advice would be to take a chance in a new adventure because that step forward is would be just the beginning.

US Mag: Great, Do you have anything specific that you would like to say to your readers?

Yes in fact with every chapter signifies an event, so as you read you will see how my wife and I were bombarded with events. No one event was worst than the other, they each had their merits of uncertainty.

US Mag: Nice, Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time?

I love to spend time with my family. Being there for my son who absolutely loves to smile and laugh everyday , I witness a miracle because it serves as a reminder that he is with me. The amount of joy within my heart is without limit and spending time with him makes me feel complete.
